Belgium Import Regulations

General Information & Importers

• • Who Can Import: Private individuals and businesses (subject to customs and registration rules).
• • Drive Orientation: Left-hand drive vehicles are allowed.
• • Inspection: A road-worthiness test is required unless the importer is the registered owner abroad (name on foreign registration certificate).
• • Age Restriction: Not specified.

Shipping & Logistics

• • Shipping Method: RORO.
• • Shipment Time: Approximately 29–34 days.
• • Vessel Schedule: Less than bi-monthly schedule.

Customs Duties & Taxes

• • Import Duties: Calculated based on customs value and vehicle type.
• • VAT: 21% applied on customs value + import duties + extra fees.
• • Personal Exemptions: Available if the owner lived outside the EU for ≥12 months, used the vehicle for ≥6 months prior to arrival, and keeps it for personal use for ≥12 months after import.

Vehicle Registration

• • Applications must be sent to the Vehicle Registration Service (DIV) after customs clearance.
• • Requires the original foreign registration certificate and purchase receipt.
• • License plates from the country of origin can be used temporarily.

Required Documentation

• • Certificate of Title & Registration (copy).
• • Original Purchase Invoice & Bill of Lading.
• • Insurance valid for at least 6 months.
• • Driver’s license & International Insurance (green card).
• • Form IM/EU 4 (agreement not to dispose of vehicle within 12 months).
• • Proof of residence outside Belgium for ≥12 months and transfer of normal residence.
