General Import Information

Origin Restriction: The importation of Japanese cars is strictly prohibited in South Korea.
Vehicle Size: Only small and medium-sized vehicles are permitted for importation.
Age Restriction: There is no specific age limit on vehicles allowed for import.
Left-Hand Drive Only: Only left-hand drive (LHD) vehicles are allowed.
Destination Port: Busan is the main port for automotive imports.
Shipping Logistics: Shipments via RORO take approximately 20–30 days with a weekly schedule via Hyundai Merchant Marine (HMM).

Mandatory Post-Import Inspections

1. Household Goods Classification

If the vehicle owner has been in South Korea for more than 6 months, the vehicle is no longer classified as household goods.
In such cases, the vehicle must undergo several mandatory post-clearance inspections.

2. Required Technical Inspections

Emissions & Noise: Rigorous emissions, noise, and vibration inspections are required.
KATRI Approval: Vehicle type and model approval must be carried out by the Korea Automobile Test and Research Institute (KATRI).

Duties & Taxes

Household Goods: South Korean Customs recognizes vehicles as part of moving household goods to determine duty eligibility.
Rates: Specific duties vary significantly depending on vehicle type and the importer’s specific residency conditions.
Advice: It is highly recommended to contact the South Korean Customs Service for a precise calculation based on your current visa status.

Original Certificate of Title and Registration.
Original Purchase Receipt / Commercial Invoice.
Original Bill of Lading.
Valid Passport and Work Permit (valid for at least 1 year).
Original Proof of Insurance.
Technical Specifications Inventory (fuel type, engine size, etc.).

Note: South Korea maintains a strict prohibition on Japanese vehicle imports and requires LHD orientation and KATRI model approval for all other imports.
