Who Can Import / Register: Only new vehicles can be registered; used and second-hand cars imported from abroad cannot be registered in Bhutan.
Inspection: A vehicle fitness test is mandatory before or on the renewal/expiry date.
Late Penalty: A penalty of Nu.50 per day applies for late fitness renewals.
Age Restriction: Not explicitly stated, but used vehicles from other countries are prohibited from registration.

Important: Importing Japanese used cars to Bhutan is essentially not feasible for private registration as only new vehicles are allowed.

Customs Duties & Taxes (based on engine CC and CIF value)

Up to 1500 CC: Duty 45%, Sales Tax 45%, Green Tax 10%.
1500–1799 CC: Duty 50%, Sales Tax 50%, Green Tax 15%.
1799–2500 CC: Duty 50%, Sales Tax 50%, Green Tax 20%.
2500–3000 CC: Duty 50%, Sales Tax 50%, Green Tax 25%.
Above 3000 CC: Duty 100%, Sales Tax 50%, Green Tax 30%.
