Used Car Import Rules & Regulations
Vehicle type: Only Right-Hand Drive (RHD) vehicles are permitted.
Temporary import: Personal vehicles (cars, motorcycles, yachts, boats) can be
temporarily imported for 1-6 months with tax/duty relief, provided they are re-exported
within the period.
Customs procedures (temporary/permanent):
Submit a Declaration Form and supporting documents.
Provide cash deposit or bank guarantee for liable taxes/duties.
Vehicle inspection by customs before entry approval.
For motorcycles via Bangkok Customs or Suvarnabhumi Airport, the importer may provide
a self-guarantee if unable to deposit cash/bank guarantee.
Permanent import:
Only one used vehicle per person is allowed for personal use.
Non-resident importers must reside in Thailand for at least 1 year with a non-immigrant
visa, work permit, and proof of residence.
Thai residents marrying foreigners must provide proof of marriage, residence change, and
vehicle ownership abroad for at least 1.5 years.
Vehicle ownership: the imported vehicle must have been owned and possessed by the
importer
for at least 1.5 years while abroad.
Import permit requirements:
Vehicles under 3500 kg require an import permit from the Industrial Standard Institute.
New vehicles not registered abroad can be imported without an import permit from the
Ministry
of Commerce.
