Used Car Import Rules & Regulations
- • Age restriction: No age limit for importing used vehicles from Japan.
- • Additional excise duties: Used motor vehicles that are 8 years or older (calculated from the year of manufacture) incur additional excise duties.
- • Effective date: From 1st July 2014, vehicles older than 8 years are subject to the new age restriction and related excise duties.
- • Inspection: EAA inspection is mandatory for vehicles imported from Japan.
- • Required certificate: Ensure the vehicle has passed EAA inspection in Japan; the EAA certificate is required for customs clearance and should be included with shipping documents.

- • Primary destination port: Dar Es Salaam.
- • Shipping method: RORO, approximately 24-34 days for delivery.
- • Vessel schedule: RORO shipping scheduled monthly from Japan to Tanzania.

- • JEVIC (Japan Export Vehicle Inspection Center).
- • QISJ (Quality Inspection Service Japan).
- • Agent's authorization letter (from the importer).
- • Import permits from relevant authorities such as TFDA (Tanzania Food and Drugs Authority) and TBS (Tanzania Bureau of Standards), as necessary.
