Main Rule

Import permits are mandatory for all vehicles imported into Australia.
Importing a car without approval is illegal and can lead to fines of up to A$13,200 and costly customs storage.

Main Types of Vehicle Import Permits

1. Classic Cars (Rolling 25-Year Rule)

Vehicles 25 years or older can be imported.
Must not have major modifications, or modifications must be approved.

2. Migrating to Australia (Personal Import Scheme)

For people moving to Australia.
Requirements:
Must have owned and used the car overseas for at least 12 months.
Only one vehicle every 5 years can be imported.

3. Enthusiast Cars (SEVS Scheme)

For special or rare cars.
Vehicle must be on the SEVS approved list.
If not listed, you can apply to add the make and model.

4. New Cars / Post-1989 Vehicles

If not eligible under other schemes, the car must be converted to Australian standards.
This must be done by a RAWS-approved workshop.

5. Race Cars

Vehicles intended only for racing.
Must provide race and driver details for approval.

6. Off-Road Vehicles

Vehicles not designed for public roads.
Cannot ever be registered for road use in Australia.

7. Temporary Imports

Requires a Carnet de Passages.
Vehicle must be re-exported within 12 months and cannot be sold in Australia.

8. Other Special Permits

For exhibitions, military vehicles, special-purpose vehicles, or repairs.

Left-Hand Drive Cars

Same import rules apply as right-hand drive cars.
Registration rules vary by state.

Import Taxes

1. Import Duty

Usually 5%.
Vehicles 30+ years old are duty-free.
Vehicles from Japan or the USA may avoid duty under free trade agreements.

2. Luxury Car Tax (LCT)

Applies to vehicles above the luxury price threshold.
33% tax.

3. GST

10% GST on all imported vehicles.
Exception: vehicles designed for people with disabilities.

Quarantine Inspection

All used vehicles are inspected for biosecurity risks.
Cars must be clean and free of dirt, soil, seeds, and debris.
If contamination is found, cleaning costs are charged to the importer.

Common Quarantine Issues

Dirt around wheels, guards, mufflers.
Engine bay or radiator dirt.
Soil under the vehicle.
Debris in interior or spare tire area.
