importation is strictly regulated based on the vehicle type and intended use.
Right-Hand Drive Only: Only right-hand drive (RHD) vehicles are permitted.
Left-hand drive vehicles not registered in SA before July 2004 are strictly prohibited.
Destination Port: Durban is the primary port for automotive imports.
Shipping Logistics: Shipments via RORO take approximately 24–34 days with a
monthly schedule.
Inspection: No pre-shipment inspection is required by South African
authorities.
Mandatory Permits & Authorization
1. SABS & ITAC Approvals
Importation of second-hand vehicles is restricted to protect the local industry.
You must apply for authorization and a permit from the International Trade Administration
Commission (ITAC) before shipping.
A Letter of Authority (LOA) from the South African Bureau of Standards (SABS) is required before
the vehicle can be legally imported.
2. Personal Eligibility
Permits are typically granted only to returning South African nationals or immigrants with
permanent residence.
Special permits may also be issued for racing cars, vintage vehicles, and inherited vehicles.
The vehicle must have been registered in the owner’s name in the country of origin.
Customs Duty: 30% standard duty; reduced to 20% for vehicles older than 20
years.
Ad Valorem Duty: A sliding scale from 0.75% to 20% based on market value.
Vehicles under R130,000 are exempt.
VAT: 15% applied to the total assessed value including all duties.
Total Impact: Cumulative taxes and duties can reach up to 70% of the
vehicle's market value.
