General Information & Import Rules

Drive Orientation: Only Left-Hand Drive (LHD) vehicles are permitted in France.
Duty Exemption: Used cars for personal use from non-EU countries may be duty-exempt if taxes were paid in the country of origin, the vehicle was owned for over 6 months, and the owner resided outside the EU for at least 1 year.
Registration Timeline: All imported vehicles must be officially registered within 3 months of their arrival.
Technical Inspection: If the vehicle is older than 4 years, a French Controle Technique certificate (less than 6 months old) is mandatory.

Shipping & Logistics

Duties, Taxes & Fees

Customs Duty: Generally 5–10% of the total vehicle value (CIF).
VAT: 19.6% calculated on the combined CIF value and Customs Duty.
VAT Note: For vehicles less than 6 months old or with under 6,000 km, VAT is based on the original invoice price.
Registration Fee: Calculated at EUR 34 per horsepower (half price for vehicles older than 10 years).
Eco Supercharge: May be applicable depending on the specific vehicle type.

French Registration Process

Certificat de Douane 846A: Obtain this essential document after paying all VAT and customs duties.
DREAL Approval: A vehicle information form must be submitted to DREAL for approval prior to registration.
Declaration: File the Déclaration de mise en circulation as part of the formal process.

Required Documentation

Identity Proof: Original Passport, Carte de Séjour, or a valid French driving license.
Residence Proof: Recent utility bill, rental contract, property deed, or insurance certificate.
Vehicle Papers: Foreign registration certificate, Certificate of Conformity (from manufacturer), and the original Purchase Invoice.
Transfer Documents: Signed Certificat de cession and Situation Administrative certificate.
