Burundi Import Regulations

General Information & Importers

• • Who Can Import: Individuals, businesses, and diplomats (special rates apply).
• • Drive Orientation: Left-hand drive vehicles are standard, but right-hand drive vehicles are also allowed.
• • Inspection: Not required; no certificates from JEVIC, JAAI, or Intertek are needed.
• • Age Restriction: There is no age limit for imported vehicles.

Shipping & Logistics

• • Destination Port: Dar Es Salaam (Tanzania) for transit to Burundi.
• • Shipment Details: Approximately 24–34 days via RORO with a monthly vessel schedule.
• • Shipping Lines: Keihin, MOL, and Hoegh Autoliners.

Duties, Taxes & Fees

• • Diplomats: 1% handling charge.
• • Large Vehicles (>10 passengers): 15% of the CIF value.
• • Tourism Vehicles: 40–100% of the CIF value.
• • Handling Fees: Standard 4% of the CIF value applies.
• • Transactional Tax: 17% calculated on (CIF + duties + handling).

Shipping Methods

• • RORO: The most affordable method; vehicles are driven into the vessel and secured.
• • Containerized Shipping: The safest method for vehicle transport.

Required Documentation

• • Original Registration Card and Purchase Invoice.
• • Copy of Passport.
• • Original Bill of Lading (must show chassis number, engine number, cubic capacity, year, brand, and model).
