General Information & Importers

  • Drive Side: Left-hand drive vehicles are allowed.
  • Duty-Free Importation: Bulgarian citizens can import a vehicle duty-free if it has been owned for more than 6 months and driven more than 6,000 kilometers.
  • Temporary Importation: Allowed for up to 6 months for non-residents with written government permission.
  • Inspection: Vehicles imported from outside the EU must undergo a mandatory inspection before registration.

Duties, Taxes & Fees

  • Import Tariff: 10% on vehicles imported from outside the EU or EEA.
  • VAT: 20% applied on the total value including import duties.
  • Eco-Tax: An environmental tax is applied to all vehicles imported from outside the EU, with the amount depending on the vehicle's age.
  • Note: Once registered, the owner cannot sell the vehicle within the first year of registration.

Vehicle Registration Requirements

  • Proof of identity and original receipt or bill of sale.
  • Proof of residency or a valid employment contract.
  • Valid roadworthiness certificate and vehicle registration documents.
  • Receipts for Bulgarian vehicle tax and proof of third-party insurance.
  • Proof of payment of customs duty (for non-EU/EEA vehicles).

Required Documentation

  • Passport copy and proof of ownership (vehicle title).
  • Purchase invoice (must show ownership for more than 6 months) and proforma invoice.
  • EUR 1 Certificate and foreign registration card.
  • Valid Visa, Driver’s license, and proof of insurance.
