General Information & Importers

• • Who Can Import: Residents (one car per family), non-residents (with a carnet/bill of entry), and diplomats (exempt from duties with proper clearance).
• • Drive Orientation: Typically left-hand drive vehicles are allowed.
• • Inspection: No inspection is required before import.
• • Age Restriction: There is no age restriction for vehicles imported into Botswana.

Shipping & Logistics

• • Destination Port: Durban, South Africa (for transit to Botswana).
• • Shipment Time: Approximately 24–34 days via RORO.
• • Vessel Schedule: Monthly frequency.

Duties, Taxes & Exemptions

• • Customs Duty: 27% of the CIF value.
• • VAT: Typically ranges from 10–21% depending on the specific vehicle context.
• • Additional VAT: 15–20% applies if more than one car is imported per family.
• • Free entry is permitted only within 6 months of a Work Permit issue (limited to one car per family).
• • Vehicle must not be sold or disposed of for 2 years from the date of import.

Practical Notes

• • Customs clearance is required even if the vehicle isn’t registered in Botswana.
• • Residents cannot use foreign-registered vehicles beyond 14 days without customs approval.
• • Diplomatic vehicles must obtain a clearing certificate and change registration within 6 months.

Required Documentation

• • Certificate of Title & Registration and Purchase Invoice or Receipt.
• • Police Clearance Certificate (from both the export country and Botswana).
• • Vehicle Evaluation (from an accredited dealer).
• • IC 2 Application and Import Permit (from the Ministry of Commerce).
• • Form CE 101 and SAD 500 Customs Declaration Form.
• • Proof of ownership, residence permit, and passport.
