General Information & Import Rules

• • Age Restriction: El Salvador enforces a strict 8-year maximum age rule for passenger and small commercial vehicles, calculated from the date of manufacture.
• • Special Exemptions: Vehicles older than 30 years can qualify as classic or antique; diplomatic and official government imports may also be exempt from the 8-year rule.
• • Safety Compliance: All imported vehicles must possess active safety systems, including functional airbags and seatbelts, and must demonstrate structural integrity.
• • Technical Inspection: Every vehicle must undergo a mandatory pre-registration technical inspection within El Salvador to verify safety and emission standards.

Emission Standards & Certification

• • Emission Certificate: Mandatory for all imports; the certificate must be obtained at least 60 days before the vehicle's arrival.
• • Factory Compliance: New vehicles must include original manufacturer certification proving compliance with emission control standards.
• • EV Incentives: Electric vehicles (EVs) benefit from significantly reduced duties and VAT to promote green energy.
